5 things you need to know about meter readings

Find out everything you need to know about meter readings: why they're important, when to do them and how to sign up for reminders.

  1. Meter readings help keep your bill accurate

Your electricity and/or gas meter is read 4 times a year, so we rely on estimates outside of these times to calculate your bill. By submitting regular meter readings you can minimise these estimates and make sure you only pay for what you use.

If you can’t send in a meter reading, don’t worry. We’ll use the estimates when needed, and will update these when we receive the quarterly readings from ESB Networks (for electricity) or Bord Gáis Networks (for gas).

  2. If you're a gas customer, they're extra important

Unfortunately we can't estimate your gas and we also can't choose when estimates are sent to us. Without a reading or estimate during your billing period we can't bill you, so submitting regular gas meter readings helps you avoid lengthy periods between bills.

  3. The best time to do it is just before you receive your bill

Submitting a reading just before the end of your billing period minimises the number of days we need to estimate. We can accept readings up to 2 days before your bill is due, so the last few days may still appear as an estimated reading.

  4. We have free meter reading reminders

You can get electricity and gas meter reading reminders by email or SMS (or both). Reminders are customised to your billing period, so they'll be sent a few days before your bill is due. To sign up for and manage your reminders, log in to My Airtricity.

  5. They're really easy to submit
