About Us
Airtricity is a fully integrated renewable electricity utility specialising in the development and long term ownership of onshore and offshore wind farms. The Group currently has almost 400MW of generating capacity in operation across Ireland and Scotland, with a further 400MW in construction and to be operational by early 2008. In addition to projects in operation and in construction, the Group has a development pipeline of more than 10,000MW. As an integrated utility, the Group has developed market-specific approaches to selling the electricity generated. For example, across the island of Ireland this electricity is sold directly to over 38,000 commercial customers through Airtricity’s supply business.
Airtricity has significant growth plans with the portfolio of assets it is planning to roll out in Europe and Asia. The Group is now in a position to capitalise on the last ten years of development and is well positioned within the wind sector to deliver attractive returns based on this portfolio approach. Airtricity is also eager to establish partnerships or joint ventures with other project developers throughout Europe and Asia to exploit the opportunities presented by the expected growth in demand for renewables.
In January 2008, the sale of Airtricity was completed to Scottish and Southern Energy Plc.
Scottish and Southern Energy (“SSE”), headquartered in Perth, in Scotland, is an integrated electricity and gas provider, listed on the London Stock Exchange with a market capitalisation of around €19 billion. SSE is the UK’s largest generator of renewable energy, owning and operating over 1,300MW of hydro and one of the UK’s largest operational wind farms. Overall, SSE has four operational wind farms in the UK, with a total installed capacity of almost 170MW, and four wind farms at various stages in the construction process with a total capacity of almost 150MW.
