Further Information
Airtricity continues to be delighted with the public response to the installation of the Ardrossan wind farm. Airtricity supports local community initiatives, and regularly conducts tours and information evenings for community groups, schools and other interested parties.
Airtricity Scotland received planning permission for the construction of the twelve-turbine, 24MW wind farm near Ardrossan, within North Ayrshire, in January 2003.
The project is located some 3km east of the firth of Clyde approximately 40km south west of Glasgow. The area concerned is shown on the map below.
Airtricity first stepped onto the site in 2001 and early in the process involved the local communities in the determining the best layout. Land Use Consultants in Glasgow completed the Environmental Impact Assessment as part of the planning application process, and has continued its involvement in the project by advising Airtricity to ensure that best practice methods are implemented both within the contracts and during the actual construction. Professional ecologists and archaeologist have been retained by Airtricity to advise during the planning and construction phases.

The wind speed indication for Ardrossan suggests an exceptional windfarm due to a combination of its height & wind speed. The Planning Application was submitted to North Ayreshire Council in Summer of 2002 and became the first windfarm to be approved in Scotland in 2003. Construction began during the summer of 2003. The remit of Airtricity’s team during the construction of the wind farm will was to achieve all zeros :
Airtricity will look to invest into the surrounding areas and Scotland as a whole by providing maintenance and operational jobs locally and allowing Scottish firms to bid for the construction project. |
